FAQ: What is Greylisting?

Greylisting is a popular and commonly used spam prevention system that tells a sender server to retry their email after a preset amount of time (60 seconds in our case). This system blocks spammers as they do not typically use mail servers with retries, so they just move to the next email address in their spam list when blocked.
This block only occurs once for each new email pair. Once the email is successfully re-submitted a record is created in the greylisting cache to tell the server the sender is legitimate and does not need to be re-checked. This record only expires if no email traffic is seen between the same email pair for 288 days.
